Full-time Sr Paralegal - Employment and Litigation

at AMERIGROUP Corporation in Virginia

JOB SUMMARY:
Under general direction provides professional legal support services to attorneys in the form of legal research, drafting, and distributing legal and business communications, organizing and maintaining case files, assisting with the preparation of cases for trial. Responsible for assisting attorneys with complex or high profile legal activities for AMERIGROUP Corporation and its subsidiary health plans. Implements new or improved legal information retrieval systems, including the legal hold process. Prepares legal documents. May investigate claims and make recommendations as to their disposition. May provide guidance and support to other paralegals as needed.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Under general direction, provide professional legal support service to attorneys in the form of legal research, drafting of legal and business communications, and assist with the preparation of cases for trial.

2. Independently prepare routine legal documents and reports under limited attorney supervision.

3. Manage all litigation critical dates and deadlines to ensure compliance with court rules and scheduling orders.

4. Manage the discovery process in litigation matters, including without limitation assisting with document review, retrieval, production and other written discovery.

5. Draft correspondence pertaining to litigation matters.

6. Review, analyze and organize documents for legal cases.

7. Manage the witness interview process for litigation matters.

8. Assist attorneys with the investigation of employment related matters and any other claims.

9. Prepare responses to EEOC and/or state agency complaints of discrimination.

10. Manage the notification of all claims to insurance carriers.

11. Assist attorneys in complex trials with high-volume document control and organization.

12. Prepare and send out legal hold notices to associates as needed and assist with monitoring for compliance.

13. Review notifications from registered agent regarding service of process of legal proceedings.

14. Assist with the management of pharmaceutical class actions (including pharmaceutical) and mass tort litigation.

15. Perform legal research as requested.

16. Establish and foster good working relationships with key contacts and act as administrative liaison between company and outside counsel.

17. Other duties as requested or assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education Required:
Bachelor’s degree, Paralegal Certification, or equivalent work experience.

Years and Type of Experience Required:
Minimum 5 years of related experience in a law firm, corporate or governmental legal department or court system, or Paralegal Certification and 3 years of related experience in a law firm, corporate or governmental legal department or court system.

Specific Technical Skills Required:
• Proficient clerical skills to be self-supporting.
• Proficient with various computer programs including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and Access.

Certifications or Licensure Preferred:
Paralegal training and certification or equivalent experience
